Born in Mannheim, Margarete Joswig studied singing with Gisela Pohl and Elsa Cavelti at the State College of Music and Dramatic Art in Frankfurt am Main. She attended Charles Spencer’s Lieder class and the Opera School and graduated in 1994 with the Opera Diploma.
Master classes with Brigitte Fassbaender and Laura Sarti and input from Prof. Rudolf Piernay completed her vocal education. The singer is currently working with Amsterdam voice coach Margreet Honig.
From 1994 to 2000, Margarete Joswig was a member of the ensemble at the Saarland State Theatre in Saarbrücken. She debuted there as Hansel in Humperdinck’s HAnsel and Gretel and sang important roles in the lyrical mezzo fach, among them Orfeo (ORFEO ED EURIDICE), Dorabella (COSÍ FAN TUTTE), Idamante (IDOMENEO), Rosina (IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA), Angelina (LA CENERENTOLAa), Isabella (L´ITALIANA IN ALGERI), Prince Orlofsky (DIE FLEDERMAUS), Maddalena (RIGOLETTO), Fenena (NABUCCO), Olga (EUGEN ONEGIN) and Magdalene (DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG). She also celebrated a resounding success as Donna Maria d’Avalos in the first German performance of Alfred Schnittke’s last opera GESUALDO.
In the 2000/01 season Margarete Joswig was Octavian (DER ROSENKAVALIER) at the Saarland State Theatre in Saarbrücken, and she took to the stage at the Stuttgart State Opera in such roles as Isabella (L´ITALIANA IN ALGERI), Rosina (IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA) and Marzelline (THE MARRIAGE OF Figaro).
In May 2002 the artist was to be heard as the Drummer in Victor Ullmann’s opera DER KAISER VON ATLANTIS at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo under the direction of Stefan Anton Reck.
Margarete Joswig was a permanent ensemble member of the Stuttgart State Opera until the summer of 2003, singing such parts there as Octavian, Martuccia (DIE GEZEICHNETEN), Ludmilla (THE BARTERED BRIDE) and Flosshilde (DAS RHEINGOLD).
The artist is also a much-sought-after Lieder and concert singer with a repertoire embracing works from Baroque to Modern. Among her achievements have been the premiere of the opera BENEDETTO MARCELLO by Joachim Raff as part of the 2002 Autumn Music Festival in Bad Urach, where in the following year’s festival she sang the part of Sigilgaita in the premiere of Siegfried Wagner’s opera RAINULF UND ADELASIA also available on CD.
Under the direction of Lothar Zagrosek, Margarete Joswig sang the part of Flosshilde in DAS RHEINGOLD in the highly acclaimed Stuttgart State Opera production of Wagner’s THE RING OF THE NIBELUNGEN, which has been released on DVD and CD.
The artist has worked freelance since the autumn of 2003. Guest engagements have taken her to such venues as Teatro San Carlo, Naples (DIE WALKÜRE), to Rome, to the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris (Mahler’s SONG OF THE EARTH), the Rheingau Festival (Verdi’s REQUIEM) and the Weimar Arts Festival (Eisler, DEUTSCHE SINFONIE).
She has worked with many conductors and artistic directors, among them Lothar Zagrosek, Sylvain Cambreling, Uwe Eric Laufenberg, Andrea Breth, Martin Kusej and Heinz Kresnik.
After an extended absence from the operatic stage, Margarete Joswig made her debut in November 2015 as the Mother in Engelbert Humperdinck’s opera HANSEL AND GRETEL at the Wiesbaden State Theatre. She also sang Fricka, Waltraute and 1. Norn in Wagner’s THE RING OF THE NIBELUNGEN (in the 2017/2018 season too).
